Courtesy of Ft. Worth Star-Telegram By Kristi Rieken/Associated Press HOUSTON - DeMeco Ryans made a name for himself as a star defensive player at Alabama well before this year's Cotton Bowl. But his dominating performance in Alabama's 13-10 win over Texas Tech introduced him to fans in this state. Now those fans will have plenty of opportunities to see the hard-hitting linebacker as he prepares for his first season with the Houston Texans. "When we had autograph signing the other day a lot of people told me they remember me from the Texas Tech game. They talk to me about how we tore up their Red Raiders," Ryans said with a laugh. He was named defensive MVP for his work in that game where he had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks in leading the charge of slowing down Tech's wacky aerial attack. READ ENTIRE STORY |

Ryans gets jump with dual skillsby Megan Manfull/Houston Chronicle Once rookie linebacker DeMeco Ryans proved he could grasp the Texans' defensive system quickly, the coaches decided to take advantage.
Training camp is still more than a month away, but Ryans is learning nearly every linebacker position and vying for a starting job. Instead of being weighed down by the responsibilities, the 21-year-old is dealing with them just like he did everything in college. While becoming a consensus All-American for Alabama last season, Ryans also excelled academically. He received his degree in business management in December after just seven semesters. A slew of athletic awards during his collegiate career are matched by an almost equal number of academic honors. "My mom always focused on me getting an education and how important it was for me to get good grades," said Ryans, who is 6-4, 236 pounds. "I just stuck with that through elementary and into college. She really instilled that in me and really did a great job." READ ENTIRE STORY

DEMECO NAMED ALABAMA'S AMATEUR OF THE YEARCourtesy of Thomas Murphy/Mobile Press Register TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - DeMeco Ryans got a kick out of the whole NFL Draft process.
The hard-hitting, modest-speaking University of Alabama linebacker was way up there on draft guru Mel Kiper's big board one day, then his draft stock was dropping the next day. It got kind of ludicrous for Ryans, who was named first-team All-America, the SEC's Defensive Player of the Year - and now Alabama's Amateur Athlete of the Year, according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association. He'll be honored at the ASWA annual banquet Monday in Auburn. "I saw one deal that said my stock was dropping because I switched agents," Ryans said. "I was like, really, when did I do that? It's crazy how they try to predict so much, with mock draft this and that." READ MORE
