Life as Mike...

Since being selected by the Houston Texans I have been working hard to learn the system and adapt to the speed of the NFL game. While I’ve still got a ways to go I feel with each practice I’m getting closer and closer to where I want to be as a player.

During training camp I have had the opportunity to play each linebacker position. Like at Alabama, the Texans play a 4-3 defensive scheme. So, it’s not a totally new thing to me but the terminology is. The past week I’ve seen most of my time at the Mike linebacker position with the first unit. As with everything in the NFL, all the positions are up for grabs and I’ve got to continue to work myself into a starting position. Depth charts in pre-season mean nothing.

Coach Kubiak is a great guy and reminds me a lot of the way Coach Shula handled things. Looking back I think the way Coach Shula did things at Alabama, with his experiences from the NFL, prepared me for this time in my career. Much like it was during my career at Alabama, the Texans find themselves in a rebuilding project. Texas is full of football history and the city of Houston has a lot to do with that. Putting this franchise and team on the road to winning is certainly what I want to help to achieve. Hopefully, through my work ethic and play on the field I can be the leader to Houston I was able to be at Alabama. And maybe my time in Houston will turn out to be as fruitful as my time in Tuscaloosa.

Texans Put Faith in Ryans

DeMecoTrainingCamp1The prospect of having an undersized rookie start at middle linebacker this season should make the Texans cringe.

Except for one thing. Last season an undersized rookie started at middle linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks, who weren't seen cringing until they had lost the Super Bowl.

No, Lofa Tatupu couldn't beat the Pittsburgh Steelers by his lonesome. But the USC product had a good-enough season on Seattle's behalf for everyone in Houston to keep an open mind about DeMeco Ryans, a Tatupu type who lined up in the middle Monday morning.

Ideally, it's nice to have a veteran in that position," said defensive coordinator Richard Smith, who is quick to remind observers that Ryans isn't ensconced in the middle. "But if the cards are dealt another way, that's all right, too. Right now the position is competitive. We moved him to the 'Mike' today. You never know what might happen tomorrow. Everybody's trying to earn a position." READ MORE

Two Positions + Six Practices = Versatily

DeMeco began his first NFL Training Camp with the Texans on Friday.TEXANS TRAINING CAMP CENTRAL

HOUSTON - For the first time since becoming a Houston Texan, DeMeco donned the full pads and joined his teammates in full contact work Sunday morning. Sunday marked the third day of Training Camp for the Texans. “It was great to get the pads on and feel the way a football player is supposed to feel,” Ryans explained. “Your natural instincts as a football player are to hit and tackle, so everything comes a little more natural when you are allowed to play the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

As he did in mini-camps, Demeco is seeing action at both the Will and Mike linebacker positions during Training Camp. His versatility in playing both positions is catching the eye of head coach Gary Kubiak. “Well he’s (DeMeco) is very smart, so he handles a lot. He’s playing will (left linebacker) and he’s playing mike (middle linebacker) so that’s a big value. The kid loves to play.”

Known as a leader both on and off the field during his playing days at Alabama, DeMeco is wasting no time in doing the same in Houston. “If you could see him in a meeting room and the way he goes about his business for Joe (Marciano) and our team, he’s like a seven or eight year veteran already. He’s a great kid, we knew that. His character is tops and his football is pretty good too.”

On Friday DeMeco celebrated his 22nd birthday with his teammates. “It was a pretty good birthday. To be in the league and be the first day of camp in my rookie season was a pretty neat way to celebrate.”

DeMeco and the Texans will continue Training Camp in Houston on Monday. They will play their first preseason game of the year on August 12 when they host the Kansas City Chiefs.
