Election a Moving Experience for RyansNearly 24 hours after taking his 8-year-old sister into the voting booth with him to cast his first-ever vote in an election, Amobi Okoye said he still had a feeling inside that he couldn’t quite describe. When DeMeco Ryans talked about the right to vote and the results of the 2008 presidential election, tears welled up in his eyes. Andre Johnson almost laughed when he thought about a daydreaming moment a few days ago, when he imagined this election igniting a celebration among Martin Luther King Jr. and other deceased Americans who thought “a change is gonna come” decades ago. Typically, politics and an NFL locker room don’t mix. This isn’t about politics. It’s about history. America chose Barack Obama, a person of African descent, to be its next president — a victory more meaningful than any football game. And many of the Texans joined in the tears, cheers and spontaneous celebrations seen around the country. “It’s big for us all, not just African-Americans,” Ryans said Wednesday after practice. “Overall as a nation, to see how far we’ve come … it’s just huge.” READ MORE

Ryans’ plea awakens Texans' defense in 2nd halfTitans are held to 88 yards, FG in last two quartersNASHVILLE, Tenn. — At halftime of the Texans’ 31-12 loss to the Tennessee Titans, middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans made an impassioned plea to his defense. He implored them to do what they came to LP Field to accomplish. Against the Titans’ run-oriented, ball-control offense, the Texans gave up three touchdowns in the first half and fell behind 24-12. “I just talked to the guys and reminded them of what we were supposed to do, and they responded the way I thought they would,” said Ryans, who led the team with 13 tackles, 10 unassisted. Hurricane Ike has forced the Texans’ home opener against the Baltimore Ravens to be moved to 7:30 p.m.Hurricane Ike has forced the Texans’ home opener against the Baltimore Ravens to be moved to 7:30 p.m. Monday night at Reliant Stadium. The game will be televised on local CBS stations in the primary and secondary team markets: Houston, Beaumont-Port Arthur and Bryan. The Monday night game between the Eagles and Cowboys at Texas Stadium will be shown at its regular time on ESPN. The NFL announced late this afternoon that, in conjunction with the Texans and Ravens, the game should be postponed for a day to help the city deal with the fallout from the hurricane that’s expected to make landfall early Saturday morning. “It doesn’t matter to me when we play, but not knowing was tough,” middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans said. “We can make plans now. We’ve been trying to focus on the games, but you can’t ignore the hurricane. You get a lot of calls from family and friends asking questions you don’t have answers for. At least now we know when we’re playing.” READ MORE
